About

Why Sojourner Hall?

A sojourner is a resident alien: someone who lives, works, and worships in a land that is not finally home. Scripture gives the name to Abraham, to Israel, and at last to the whole church of Christ. We take the name gladly.

Sojourner Hall exists to teach Christian theology to pilgrims. Clear, patient, unhurried study for people walking the long road between the resurrection of Christ and the renewal of all things.

Our Faith

We confess the historic Reformed faith, gladly received from the whole church through the ages: the triune God, the authority of Holy Scripture, and salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Our Tutors

Our tutors are pastors and teachers in the Reformed tradition, committed to careful exegesis, the great tradition, and the good of the church.

The Two Ages

The Overlap of the Ages

Illuminated diagram of two overlapping circles, a gold one labelled This Age and a lapis one labelled The Age to Come, each label opening with an illuminated initial; in the gold-tinted overlap, red rubric text reads: the church sojourns here

The New Testament speaks of two ages: this present age, and the age to come. At the resurrection of Jesus the age to come dawned in the middle of history, and so the church now lives where the two ages overlap. Already raised with Christ; not yet home. This conviction shapes everything taught in the Hall.

Meredith Kline

Meredith G. Kline (1922 to 2007) taught a generation to read Scripture as covenant document and redemptive drama: kingdom and exile, oath and ordeal, the glory of God leading his people home. His biblical theology runs through the curriculum of the Hall.

Church Fathers

The church has read Scripture this way from the beginning. From Irenaeus to Augustine, the Fathers teach us to see the whole of Scripture as one story, fulfilled in Christ.
